Global Smile Foundation trip to Ecuador

September 5th
Guayaquil, Ecuador

Project Description

This is a trip to facilitate cleft lip and palate repair. We will be working at a local hospital to perform surgeries for children in need.

Population Served

Children with cleft lip and palate. Having these congenital defects repaired can be life changing for speech, swallowing, and simply functioning in society. This project will help as many children as possible with providing surgical care.

Expected Impact

We expect to make immense impact for the patients served as well as continue to foster a relationship with the local medical communities.

Trip Photos & Recap

We had an amazing trip to Guayaquil, Ecuador to serve the children there afflicted by cleft lip and palate. I was in the first week of a two week program in which 72 children were able to have excellent, safe and successful surgeries. I myself performed 6 separate major palatoplasties as well as scar revision from a dog bite injury. Nothing will ever beat the feeling of getting to share your abilities with those in need and speaking with those parents after a job well done.

Beyond the surgeries performed, it was an excellent chance to learn professionally from other perspectives and techniques from colleagues in the field. Some of these I plan to incorporate into my practice back in Tennessee.

I can't thank Doximity enough for supporting me in my travel and for all the work that they do to support physicians every day.
