October Medical POD

October 2nd
Managua, Nicaragua

Project Description

My family and I will be traveling with a team of nurse practitioners and doctors to serve in Managua, Nicaragua. I have served with the Nicaraguan resource network since 2017 in country and on their medical board. The NRN medical pod oversees and provides support for over 200 special needs children with various disabilities who have no access to health insurance. We support a medical team and clinic on the ground with 100% volunteers and donations. The average Nicaraguan makes less than $2 per day. There is no government assistance for food or medical care.

Population Served

Our team will be conducting 5 clinics during our week on the ground. 2 clinic will be for special needs children. 3 clinics are in rural communities with no access to health care. One of these clinics will be providing eye care, glasses and exams for the elderly. We will be replacing the feeding tubes for our g-tube patients as well.

There will also be art fairs, games and activities for the kids while waiting to see providers.

Expected Impact

There will be a large amount of education focused on dental health, hydration and diet. There is a large population of patients with obesity, diabetes and hypertension. We have 2 providers and a medical team on the ground who will continue with follow up care and education. A second medical team is schedule for November.
Most importantly, our Medical Board has established a beautiful relationship with our medical team in country which will continue for years to come God willing. They are a beautiful people and we are alway so much more blessed by them.

Trip Photos & Recap

Hola!! My name is Angela Martinez FNP. My husband and I have been serving in Nicaragua through the Nicaraguan Resource Network "NRN" since 2017. NRN supports 4 schools in and around Managua, Nicaragua. The Nicaraguan NRN Medical team on the ground cares for all the school children. NRN supports the Agape Medical Program for over 200 special needs children as well. NRN coordinates a sponsorship program for the school children, special needs kid and college students.

420 patients were seen during our recent trip to Nicaragua. We were able to conduct year physical for the children of the Agape Special needs program. It was a joy to see how many of the kids had grown in the past year. So many of them are thriving under the care of the medical team.

The highlight of this trip was the art tables. During each clinic ALL the children were able to color, paint and make bracelets. Such simple things, that we take for granted in the US - a child coloring. But these kids don't have crayons and paint. Watching their little faces light up was heart warming.
