Cambodia Smile

January 5th
Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Project Description

Humanitarian mission to Phnom Penh Cambodia. US based surgical team partner up with local surgical team to provide pro bono services for children. Surgeries focus on ear reconstruction (congenital microtias), primary cleft lips and cleft palates, some burns and plastics (face flaps secondary to malignant lesion excisions). Local team is part of Smile Cambodia, member of Smile Asia.

Population Served

Children from all parts of Cambodia with facial congenital deformities - cleft lip, cleft palate, microtia (syndromic and non-syndromic), burns, facial/ truncal lesions (benign and malignant). Ordinarily the families of these children do not have the financial support to have these surgeries performed and rely on humanitarian groups who work in partnership with local teams and hospitals to provide necessary medical/ surgical care.

Expected Impact

Necessary surgical and medical care provided to vulnerable populations at no cost to families. Local partnership with surgical teams allows for formal teaching in the OR both ways. US and Cambodian teams work with physicians in training (resident and fellows) and provide clinical care in the OR, as well as didactic teaching in the form of lectures and workshops.
