Guyana International Mission Trip

February 19th
Georgetown, Guyana

Project Description

While at the Georgetown Public Hospital, I will be providing hands-on, pro bono medical care, in the inpatient setting. Additionally, I will be working with the medical residents at the Georgetown Public Hospital and have the opportunity to teach medical education to medicine residents and medical students at the hospital. I hope to make a difference by not only providing free medical care to underserved patients but also the opportunity to share my medical knowledge with the local residents and medical students.

Population Served

The Georgetown Public Hospital was chosen because of the consistent partnership between that institution and Pittsburgh, PA. It is a great educational environment and they are very interested in true cross-cultural exchange and teaching. We are including Georgetown Public Hospital faculty in our faculty development series. Additionally, the Senior Vice President and the Chief Clinical Officer of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion for Allegheny Health Network/Highmark Health, Dr Margaret Larkins-Pettigrew, is developing a non-profit with GPHC to combat infant-child mortality.

Expected Impact

The expected impact of the medical mission trip is to not only to further the partnership between Georgetown Public Hospital and Pittsburgh, but to also continue the cross-cultural exchange and ideas/ways of practice between our residents and the Georgetown’s residents. With the exchange of ideas and medical knowledge between both hospitals, patients are provided with the best possible care. After our return, I hope to practice what I learned during my time at the Georgetown Hospital, specifically having the opportunity to practice in resource limited settings, with my patients here in Pittsburgh. Trip Photos & Recap

My trip to Guyana was a very humbling experience, it was a great opportunity to learn how to practice in a resource limited setting, while also learning from the residents and teaching the medical students including POCUS.
