I plan to participate in a mission trip to Rwanda organized by the University of Global Health Equity (UGHE). During this trip, I will teach UGHE's medical students and provide dermatological care and education to underserved communities in Rwanda. Our activities will include conducting skin screenings, diagnosing and treating dermatological conditions, and providing educational sessions on skincare and prevention measures. By educating the medical students, we aim to improve access to quality healthcare and enhance overall well-being. Our efforts will make a difference by empowering individuals and promoting long-term dermatological care in the region.
The beneficiaries of our project will be the underserved communities in Butaro Rwanda, a rural area with limited access to healthcare services. This population faces various dermatological challenges, including skin infections, parasitic infestations, and tropical diseases. By focusing on this population, we aim to address the specific dermatological needs of individuals who may otherwise lack access to specialized care. Our project will prioritize serving vulnerable populations, including children, elderly individuals, and individuals living with HIV/AIDS, who are at higher risk of dermatological conditions.
The expected impact of our project is multifaceted. Firstly, we anticipate providing direct relief to individuals suffering from dermatological conditions by offering diagnosis, treatment, and education. By improving skin health, we can alleviate discomfort, prevent complications, and enhance quality of life for patients. Additionally, our collaboration with UGHE's medical students will contribute to their education and training in dermatology, fostering a future generation of healthcare leaders equipped to address dermatological challenges in Rwanda and beyond. Furthermore, the learnings from this experience will carry forward as I return to my residency program, where I will share insights, best practices, and cultural competencies gained from this mission trip. Through ongoing education and advocacy efforts, we will continue to promote dermatological care and awareness, ultimately contributing to improved health outcomes and equity in healthcare delivery.
During my visit to the University of Global Health Equity in Rwanda, I taught a one-week dermatology course to senior medical students and worked with them at Butaro District Hospital. This experience had a significant impact on the students, enhancing their understanding and skills in dermatology, which is crucial in an underserved area. We also treated patients with limited access to specialized care, providing essential diagnoses and treatments. The trip was rewarding, as it not only helped the students gain practical experience but also improved healthcare outcomes for the local community.
