POCUS in the Robert Reid Cabral PICU and ED

April 15th
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic

Project Description

I am traveling to Santo Domingo to teach POCUS to the PICU and Pediatric ED physicians at the largest tertiary care hospital in the Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. This will be the fourth site visit and is part of a longitudinal plan to train physicians to be super users and ensure future integration of POCUS into training and patient care in the hospital.

Population Served

The Robert Reid Cabral hospital is the referral center for the entire south east area of the Dominican Republic. The patients that present there are typically high acuity and many do not have health insurance. The pathology that is seen in the PICU and ED requires accurate diagnostics and the hospital has limited access to radiologic services. The ability to utilize POCUS in the care of the patients is profound and we have already begun to see the integration by the team over the past year since we began our partnership.

Expected Impact

The goal is to improve the care of patient in the south east of the Dominican Republic by increasing the diagnostic accuracy of the physicians working in the PICU and ED of the largest tertiary care referral center. The group is committed to learning POCUS and the visits from our physician team in the US to come and train providers has been enormously successful. It is difficult to support the travel/lodging independently and would enormously grateful for any support from doximity for this work.

Trip Photos & Recap

I worked with a team of physicians from the US teaching POCUS in Santo Domingo, DR. We were teaching in the tertiary care pediatric hospital and our primary learner groups were the fellows from the pediatric ICU and ED. We participated in teaching sessions on the wards and since our visit the group has been utilizing POCUS in their bedside assessments of patients. We are planning for continued visits to allow for additional education in the coming years.
