Pediatric POCUS Education in Santo Domingo, DR.

October 21st
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic

Project Description

This is a follow up visit for our longitudinal collaboration with Dr. Cesar Mota Curiel (Pediatric ED) and Dr. Emma Altagracia Almonte Baez (Pediatric ICU) at the Robert Reid Cabral Children’s Hospital in Santo Domingo, DR.

We hope plan to continue to develop me refine curricula and ongoing “teach the teacher” modules for the staff clinicians on the ground. In addition, we will further explore mechanisms of image storage for educational review and quality assurance.

The power of POCUS has substantial impact on the care of sick and injured children - including POCUS for acute resuscitation, trauma, pneumonia, sepsis, dengue, myocarditis, intussusception, procedural guidance and many more!

Population Served

The Hospital Infantil Dr. Robert Reid Cabral is the country’s primary children’s hospital. With over 350 beds, almost all pediatric specialties are available.

We hope to impact physicians, nurses, medical students and other staff that would utilize POCUS to enhance the accuracy, timeliness, and safety of care provide to pediatric patients.

Expected Impact

Our goal is to continue to develop expertise on the ground with ongoing teleguidance and other remote supports to build POCUS infrastructure and expand their capacity moving forward.

The following applications will be taught during this medical mission: focused assessment with sonography in trauma, focused cardiac ultrasound, skin and soft tissue ultrasound, musculoskeletal ultrasound of joints and tendons, ocular ultrasound, abdominal ultrasound for surgical conditions like appendicitis, intussusception and pyloric stenosis, lung ultrasound for pneumonia and other emergencies, bladder ultrasound, orthopedic ultrasound, ultrasound guided procedures (central lines, nerve blocks, etc.)

Trip Photos & Recap

We had and amazing collaboration with the hospital staff at the Robert Reid Cabral Children’s Hospital in Santo Domingo, DR. A trauma and vascular access oriented workshop was attended by pediatricians, surgeons, critical care, and emergency medicine specialists.

Through the delivery of two handheld devices we will follow pocus utilization over the next 3-4 months and hope to report back in February 2025!
