Project Description

This project is to provide surgical, medical, dental, Ophthalmology care to the most vulnerable patients in rural Ghana. I am part of the General Surgery group going every year to provide surgical care including not limited to Inguinoscrotal hernia repair, lumps and bumps, hemorrhoid treatment, Thyroidectomies. Help with laparoscopic surgery for ectopic pregnancies, fertility and possibly cholecystectomies.

Population Served

This trip benefits the most vulnerable patients in rural central and northern Ghana. This population is far away from major cities to get access to care and they are mostly farmers with very limited access to medical and surgical care.

Expected Impact

The impact is two folds
1- Help ease the burden of surgical disease
2- Collaboration with local surgeons for further training in laparoscopic surgery and knowledge exchange and provide supplies such synthetic mesh for herniorrhaphy.

The Ghana Medical Mission 2024 trip organized by the non-profit organization United Services to Africa (USTA) and the Ghana SDA hospitals and facilities impact people in the following cities in Ghana (Kumasi, Techiman, Asamang, Sunyani, Namong). The mission at large impacts people in the above cities who have low ressources and in need of dental care, Cataract surgeries, eye screenings and reading glasses, medical screenings for high blood pressure, diabetes, anemia and surgical services in Obstetric/gynecology, general surgery and plastic surgery. The mission trip also provides teaching to medical professionals.
As a General Surgeon I assisted in helping patients with umbilical/ventral and inguinal hernias, patients with hydroceles, Hemorrhoids, soft tissue masses. I also participated in the education and hands on training of the medical students and residents alike. These patients have issue with access to health and affordability of care.
