August 13th
West and North regions, Belize

Project Description

Project Aim: Through a bi-directional and intradepartmental collaborative approach, build capacity for Accident & Emergency (A&E) providers at Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital Authority (KHMH) and other pediatric providers in-country on the recognition and management of acutely ill children through the development of effective and high quality educational and process initiatives
Project Objectives: 1) Conduct site assessment on ground for development of potential PEM collaborative projects for program in upcoming years 2)Develop a novel two year pediatric emergency medicine (PEM) curriculum bundle for use in educating A&E and pediatric healthcare providers, in collaboration with leadership at KHMH, which includes both PEM core topics (6 modules) and Emergency Triage, Assessment, and Treatment (ETAT) 3) Implement the PEM curriculum bundle through a 2 year-long training of A&E providers at KHMH then rollout to country regions in collaboration with MOH 4) Evaluate the quality of the PEM curriculum bundle through qualitative and quantitative analysis 5 )Develop an ETAT train-the-trainer program in collaboration with local leadership at KHMH, the Ministry of Health (MoH) and Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) that will be expanded nationally 6) Pilot the WHO Basic Emergency Care (BEC) course through a national train-the-trainer methodology.

Population Served

This program directly benefits pediatric providers in the country and through doing so benefits the entire pediatric population of Belize as this is a national roll out.

Expected Impact

By implementing a train-the-trainer methodology, the program fosters the develop of sustainable ETAT trainings. The end goal is that every region has all of their triage personnel trained in ETAT from nurses to physicians as well as having a cohort of local trainers for each region to ensure that all new personnel are trained.

Trip Photos & Recap

I went to Belize to join in teaching Emergency Triage Assessment and Treatment (ETAT) to hospital workers in the North Region of Belize. At the end of this training every doctor had been trained in ETAT as well as the majority of nurses. This course is available for all hospital healthcare workers.
