Project Description

I am an Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine. I plan to lecture on the work that I have done in Ethiopia and Ghana over the past two years, on how to develop a point-of-care ultrasound curriculum and build international partnerships that are mutually beneficial between teaching hospitals. This will make a difference because I plan to lecture at the world’s only scientific conference on emergency care in Africa. I will be sharing and exchanging information with trainees and emergency medicine leaders primarily based in African countries that can carry this information back to their hospitals and academic institutions to improve the education of point-of-care ultrasound and enhance the current practice of emergency care.

Population Served

Emergency medicine clinicians - advanced practice professionals, emergency medicine trainees, and physicians will directly benefit from this information. In turn, patients will indirectly benefit from this information. Point-of-care ultrasound has become an integral part of providing cost-effective care in resource-limited settings to rapidly make diagnoses and guide treatment. This population of clinicians directly work and influence patient care - many of them in low resource settings and can be instrumental in changing the way that care is delivered across the African continent.

Expected Impact

Point-of-care ultrasound is still relatively new within emergency medicine and it is accessible, affordable, and attainable. There is an opportunity to vastly change numerous patients' lives by teaching concepts to healthcare leaders in emergency medicine across Africa, who will be present at this conference. My goal is that through these lectures, I will be able to continue to build upon my existing partnerships on the continent, and work with more hospitals to teach ultrasound. Also, I will be able to share best practices for hospitals and academic institutions to start or improve their current ultrasound curriculum, as well as develop meaningful and mutually beneficial partnerships for the education of ultrasound with international partners.

Trip Photos & Recap

Through the Doximity Foundation, I was able to participate in the world's only and largest scientific conference on emergency care in Africa in Gaborone, Botswana. I was able to present a lecture on the work that I have done in sub-Saharan Africa on developing a point-of-care ultrasound curriculum for clinicians. Also, I was able to serve as an instructor for courses in basic and advanced point-of-care ultrasound for emergency clinicians from all over the world.

Through this grant, I was able to share and exchange vital information with emergency medicine trainees and clinical leaders primarily based in African countries that can carry this information back to their hospitals and academic institutions to improve the education of point-of-care ultrasound and enhance the current practice of emergency care. I was able to meet many influential leaders in global health and discuss further collaboration to advance emergency care across the continent.

This conference not only left a lasting impact on me to continue my work but it was inspiring to witness the future of emergency medicine and promote the use of point-of-care ultrasound in clinical settings to lead to more cost-effective care and improve diagnostic accuracy. Thank you very much to the Doximity Foundation for sponsoring this travel grant!
