International anesthesia rotation in Kijabe, Kenya

March 7th
Kijabe, Kenya

Project Description

Through the Vanderbilt International Anesthesia program, I plan to serve as an anesthesiology consultant during a one-month, ACGME-approved rotation at AIC Kijabe Hospital in Kijabe, Kenya in March 2025. My primary role will involve teaching resident physicians and nurse anesthetist students the principles of safe anesthesia practice in a resource-limited area. Each day, I will deliver formal lectures, supervise cases, and provide hands-on training in ultrasonography and regional anesthesia, aiming to broaden the knowledge and skillsets of local anesthesia care providers. In addition to direct patient care, my focus will be on equipping these providers with teaching materials and sustainable resources to create a lasting impact. I firmly believe that this rotation will not only enrich my career but also contribute to improving anesthesia care in the region for years to come.

Population Served

AIC Kijabe Hospital impacts over one million lives annually across Africa through its healthcare and education services. Despite its critical role in Kenya’s healthcare system, the country remains significantly underserved, with limited access to surgical and anesthesia care. Serving this vulnerable population would be an absolute privilege, as it aligns with my passion for bridging healthcare disparities. I am particularly excited about the opportunity for mutual learning during this rotation. After speaking with colleagues who have worked in Kijabe, I was inspired by their experiences teaching and learning alongside the Kenyan Registered Nurse Anesthetists (KRNAs). Their ability to deliver exceptional care despite resource limitations is truly admirable, and I look forward to contributing to and learning from their expertise.

Expected Impact

The international anesthesia rotation in Kijabe offers a unique opportunity to gain firsthand experience addressing global healthcare disparities while caring for patients in a low-resource setting. As a U.S.-based resident physician with access to abundant resources and training, I am eager to broaden my perspective and enhance my adaptability as an anesthesiologist. This experience will not only strengthen my clinical skills but also deepen my understanding of global health challenges. After completing my residency, I plan to continue engaging in global health through short-term medical missions. I am committed to integrating global health into my career to contribute meaningfully to underserved communities worldwide.
