HVO Vietnam Dermatology Residency Rotation

February 17th
Huế, Vietnam

Project Description

I have been accepted by the Health Volunteers Overseas program to serve with local healthcare professionals in Hue, Vietnam to deliver dermatological education and care. This includes conducting workshops on diagnosing and treating common and complex skin conditions, teaching procedural dermatology techniques, and fostering sustainable practices through mentorship programs. By addressing the gaps in dermatological expertise and resources, the project will empower local providers to better serve their communities, creating a ripple effect of improved care even after the project concludes. This grant will help make this dream a reality, allowing me to afford travel and provide care to patients who would otherwise have no access to a dermatologist, fulfilling my deep desire to serve where the need is greatest.

Population Served

The patients are underserved communities in Vietnam and the local healthcare providers who serve them. This population often faces limited access to dermatological care, compounded by resource constraints and a lack of specialized training. By equipping local providers with knowledge and skills, we can directly enhance the quality of care for patients while also building long-term capacity within the healthcare system. My focus on this population stems from a commitment to addressing health disparities and fostering equitable care delivery worldwide. This grant will enable me to provide crucial care and training to a population that has long needed this level of support and compassion.

Expected Impact

The project is expected to significantly improve the quality and accessibility of dermatological care in underserved communities in Hue. I will gain the confidence and expertise to manage a broader range of conditions, reducing the burden of untreated skin diseases. Upon my return, I will integrate the insights gained into my practice, sharing findings through academic presentations, publications and patient care. By incorporating these experiences into global health and dermatology education, I aim to inspire future initiatives and advocate for increased focus on underserved populations. This grant will not only help me reach Vietnam but also leave a lasting impact on the lives of patients who might otherwise suffer in silence.

Trip Photos & Recap

Two weeks in Vietnam have been a transformative experience. Through Health Volunteers Overseas, George Washington University Dermatology, Dox Foundation, and Hue University Department of Dermatology, I had the incredible opportunity to teach dermatology to attending physicians, residents, and students—while also learning from their deep clinical expertise and unique perspectives on patient care. This exchange of knowledge and culture has been invaluable, shaping me both as a physician and as a person. I am deeply grateful for the friendships I have built and the warm welcome I received. Thank you for this unforgettable experience!
