Global Health Volunteering in Guyana

February 2nd
Georgetown, Guyana

Project Description

As a medical resident participating in a global health rotation in Guyana, I plan to contribute both clinically and educationally to the healthcare system. My primary focus will be on providing care to patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings, utilizing the clinical acumen and evidence-based approaches I have developed during my training in the United States and Lebanon.

Beyond direct patient care, I aim to collaborate with local residents and healthcare teams to foster a culture of continuous learning. This includes sharing strategies for integrating evidence-based medicine into daily practice and enhancing clinical decision-making. Additionally, I hope to assist in advancing research capabilities by guiding residents in developing research projects, improving data collection, and interpreting evidence to drive better patient outcomes.

By blending clinical care with education and mentorship, I hope to leave a lasting impact by empowering local healthcare providers to continue building sustainable improvements in patient care long after the rotation ends.

Population Served

The primary beneficiaries of my project will be patients receiving care at the hospital and outpatient clinics in Guyana, particularly those in underserved communities with limited access to advanced medical resources. Additionally, the local healthcare team, including residents and other medical staff, will benefit from educational and mentorship opportunities aimed at enhancing their clinical and research skills.

This population is ideal for this project due to the unique challenges they face, including limited healthcare infrastructure and resources. By sharing the diverse clinical experiences I have gained in the United States and Lebanon, I hope to address some of these gaps, improve patient outcomes, and contribute to the professional growth of healthcare providers in Guyana.

Expected Impact

The expected impact of this project includes both immediate and long-term benefits. In the short term, patients will receive high-quality care informed by evidence-based practices, potentially leading to improved health outcomes. The local healthcare providers will gain new insights into clinical decision-making, research methodologies, and evidence-based approaches, enhancing their ability to address complex medical cases.

In the long term, the skills and knowledge shared during this rotation can create a ripple effect as local residents and staff apply and further disseminate these practices. By fostering a collaborative and educational environment, this project aims to empower healthcare teams to sustain improvements in patient care and research beyond my time in Guyana.

The learnings I gain during this experience will also carry forward, enriching my own practice as a physician. Working in a resource-limited setting will deepen my understanding of global health challenges, strengthen my adaptability, and refine my ability to deliver compassionate, patient-centered care in diverse environments.

Trip Photos & Recap

At Georgetown Public Hospital, I worked alongside physicians managing complex cases with limited resources, which led to valuable discussions about diagnostic approaches and treatment strategies. Through these exchanges, I was able to share insights from my own training while also learning from their resourceful and adaptive methods.

For patients, my presence contributed to their care by assisting in diagnoses, optimizing treatment plans, and providing education about their conditions. In a setting where specialist access can be limited, even small interventions—such as guiding medication adjustments or offering alternative management strategies—made a difference.

Beyond the hospital, Guyana’s rich culture and warm, welcoming people made the trip even more memorable. The country’s diverse heritage is reflected in its cuisine, traditions, and vibrant atmosphere. Exploring the natural beauty of Guyana was another highlight—whether it was seeing the stunning Kaieteur Falls, venturing into the lush rainforests, or experiencing the serene rivers and wildlife.
