Medical Trip to Lusaka, Zambia

March 3rd
Lusaka, Zambia

Project Description

This is an organization that works with existing health care organizations to improve health in low resource settings in Lusaka, Zambia. I will primarily be working in HIV pediatric clinic in Lusaka where I will work together with local healthcare workers to provide medical care to patients to gain understanding of the local medical system and help provide medical care.

Population Served

Pediatric patients in Lusaka, Zambia. This population is largely underserved where even the smallest amount of help will assist the community. This community will benefit because I will be directly working in pediatric clinics in the local community with a local team to provide thorough and appropriate care. We will also be educating patients and parents in school settings, clinics, and different areas of the community.

Expected Impact

I am hoping to work closely with our colleagues in Zambia to come up with safe and sustainable medical treatment plans for patient we serve in a low resource settings. Local pediatric patients will have thorough and culturally sensitive medical care provided to them and I will learn from the local healthcare team to help the most patients within the community. I hope that by learning within a different cultural environment with low resources, we bring back to the US skills including flexibility and adaptability for our patients by also reflecting often on our patients hardships. I also hope to further learn to understand how to navigate cultural barriers to increase access to healthcare.

Trip Photos & Recap

The clinic I worked in treated and supported patients with HIV of all ages. They supplied medications for HIV, counseling support, family support, emotional support, and education. I learned an immense amount from the staff and I did teaching as well. The people who were impacted the most were the patients and staff of the clinic. We were able to work together to treat and support as many people as we could. With providing more hands within clinic, more patients could be helped.
