Jordan Zaatari Camp Medical Mission

April 19th
Amman, Jordan

Project Description

SAMS volunteers have taken on a vital role in the ongoing medical missions to
Jordan, focusing on delivering crucial medical aid programs nationwide. Their efforts have been essential in providing specialized healthcare to underserved populations, particularly among refugee communities. The significance of
medical missions cannot be overstated. These missions allow health professionals from a variety of medical fields to contribute their skills to those in dire need. By delivering specialized and surgical care, the missions serve as a lifeline for vulnerable populations, enabling them to access essential healthcare services that they might not otherwise receive. In a region facing significant challenges, these healthcare missions aim to address critical medical needs, alleviate suffering, and help build stronger and healthier
communities.

SAMS In collaboration with, Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Social
Development, the public Security Directorate/SRAD, Jordanian universities,
UNHCR, INGOs, and local community-based organizations, Public and private hospitals will conduct a medical mission from 19-24 April 2025.

As a participant representing the radiology speciality, my focus will be towards educating local providers on imaging indications, techniques, and interpretation.

Population Served

Our intended audience is the Syrian refugee population at Zaatari camp in Jordan. Roughly 60-80,000 refugee call this location home, which has developed into a sprawling tent city with multiple healthcare centers. The intended recipients of our work are the refugee population however, much of our work will be focused on teaching healthcare providers.

Needless to say, this population remains incredibly vulnerable. The turmoil of the region and the continued dire situation prompted my participation. I also have some personal connection to the Syrian population as a second generation immigrant.

Expected Impact

Our mission to the Zaatari camp in Jordan will focus on empowering local healthcare providers through hands-on radiology training, enhancing their ability to diagnose and manage a wide range of medical conditions. By equipping them with essential imaging skills, we will help build their confidence in interpreting studies, optimizing workflows, and making informed clinical decisions. This knowledge transfer will have a lasting impact, as each provider we train will go on to serve countless patients in the future, improving diagnostic accuracy and patient outcomes long after our visit. Strengthening local capacity in radiology ensures sustainable, high-quality care for this vulnerable population.

Trip Photos & Recap

Our recent medical mission to the Zaatari Refugee Camp in northern Jordan focused on enhancing diagnostic capabilities and medical education for Syrian refugees and local healthcare providers. The mission included the provision of sonographic and radiographic examinations to support the clinical care of camp residents, addressing critical gaps in diagnostic imaging access.

In addition to clinical services, the mission emphasized capacity building through academic engagement. Lectures on core radiology concepts were delivered to medical students, fostering foundational knowledge in imaging interpretation. Furthermore, we conducted hands-on training in point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) for healthcare providers at all levels, empowering them with practical diagnostic tools for use in low-resource and high-demand settings.

This mission contributed to both immediate patient care and long-term healthcare resilience in the region by supporting diagnostic infrastructure and enhancing local provider competencies.
