The purpose of this new longitudinal teaching module is to teach basic and advanced ultrasound curriculum to the emergency medicine residents at the University of Botswana in Gaborone. This will include in classroom lectures and hands on practice on how to optimize images and clinical integration of ultrasound.
The population would mainly be the emergency medicine residents at the University of Botswana as well as attending physicians and mid level providers.
Given the limited resources in some underserved areas to more advanced imaging such as CT imaging or MRI imaging, ultrasound will be able to help aid decision making in the emergency setting as well as help make definitive diagnoses with a device that is low cost, low radiation, and efficient. Enabling and introducing its use, and giving lectures as well as hands on practice will aid spreading awareness of ultrasound use. As this longitudinal module is new, we are excited to see the pre and post test results and increase in knowledge and use of ultrasound, hoping for providers to then be able to teach their peers.
We had an amazing trip going to Gaborone, Botswana for the first time in affiliation with GHCC. We taught basic and advanced Point of Care Ultrasound to medical officers and residents at Sir Ketumile Masire Teaching Hospital and hands on scanning at Princess Marina Hospital.
