Road2IR travel to Tanzania

August 2nd
Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

Project Description

I plan to teach Tanzania Radiology Residents the practice of Interventional Radiology. I will also examine the senior residents on their Oral Boards for their Certification necessary for graduation.

Population Served

This will serve millions of people in Tanzania who have extremely limited access to Interventional Radiology.

Expected Impact

The Road2IR has proven that it can establish the practice of Interventional Radiology in Africa in a way which is self-sustaining. Many residents who graduate the program stay on staff to teach future residents.

Trip Photos & Recap

This is my fifth annual trip to Tanzania that was supported by Doximity, for which I am grateful. This trip is part of the highly successful Road2IR Global Health training program which has brought the subspecialty of Interventional Radiology (IR) to Tanzania. During this trip, I taught IR residents in Dar es Salaam how to perform advanced IR cases and saw patients with them in clinic before and after procedures. As it was the end of their academic year, I also examined Junior and Senior IR residents in Oral Boards format. During the five years that this program has been in place, it has proven to be self sustaining, now with 4 former trainees staying on as faculty and other graduates now practicing in Tanzania or other African countries.
