Microsurgery and Hand Surgery Outreach

November 15th
Kampala, Uganda

Project Description

I am a Nurse Educator for Resurge. My role will be to provide educational presentations for the physician and nursing staff to promote best care of patients undergoing microvascular or hand surgery reconstruction procedures. The presentations and hands on education will include details about the procedures
(indications and desired outcomes), handling of surgical equipment, perioperative care of the patient, and rehabilitation.

Population Served

Kampala Uganda Nursing and medical staff. Uganda's citizens continue to experience poverty. There is a high incidence of burn injuries in young children due to outdoor fires, inadequate supervision and lack of electricity.
Patients of all ages who require reconstructive procedures resulting from congenital or acquired deformities.
Uganda is one of the sites designated for educational outreach with the infrastructure and residency training programs to sustain learning.

Expected Impact

There are follow up meetings via a remote platform to review education provided, patient cases and outcomes. Opportunities will be identified and additional trips to this site are ongoing to support training and independent practice.

Trip Photos & Recap

Kiruddu Hospital in Kampala Uganda serves a vast area populated by an immensely needy population. Burns are an especially significant problem as a result of absent or inadequate resources. Children are disproportionately affected.
The staff at Kiruddu are hard working and dedicated. We were able to provide support with education for nursing, therapy and medical personnel. Over 20 patients underwent reconstructive surgery, providing the opportunity to train the residents and staff surgeons. Education on the microsurgery, reconstruction, sepsis, pain, burns and nursing was provided and well received.
Thank you for supporting this outreach.
