Kapenguria Kenya with Saving Mothers

September 26th
Kapenguria, Kenya

Project Description

We provide gynecologic and urologic care to underserved women in Western Kenya

Population Served

The population in Western Kenya is very underserved. There is no urogynecologists for hundreds of miles and the majority of the population can not afford to pay for the small amount of care that is available.

Expected Impact

Gynecologic surgeons from neighboring regions as wall as local gynecologists will be present to learn techniques to care for the common disorders of urinary and fecal incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse. They will be able to carry this knowledge forward and take care of the very large population in need.

Trip Photos & Recap

We cared for numerous women in rural western Kenya. We saw numerous patients who had torn into their rectum at delivery and never had the tear repaired and resulted in fecal incontinence. There were multiple other patients who had torn into their bladder at the time of their delivery and had a connection between the bladder and the vagina resulting in the constant leak of urine. We were able to reconstruct the pelvic floor of these patients to hopefully significantly improve their quality of life. We cared for multiple patients with significan mestrual bleeding from fibroids. They were also having fertility issues and we were able to remove the fibroids to lessen their monthly bleeding and enable them to get pregnancy. Patients came from multiple communities in western Kenya, knowing that we were providing care without cost that they would otherwise not be able to receive
