I am a pediatric anesthesiologist at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and will be participating with the Project Malawi this coming Spring. This project is a collaboration with the Malawi Ministry of Health to improve health through research, capacity building and clinical care. I will be working directly with local anesthesia providers, surgeons, patients, and learners of diverse backgrounds My work will include providing direct anesthetic care as well as education and capacity building work.
Those served will be the patients, anesthesia provers, surgeons and nurses of the Kamuzu Central Hospital in Malawi
The expected impact will be improved anesthesia capacity for local anesthesia providers, via didactic education and clinical guidance. Patients will be directly impacted from this work. This impact will have a sustainable lasting effect given Project Malawi has been in existence since 1999. This is my first of what I hope to be lifetime of annual trips. While I am not in Malawi, other UNC providers will be participating on the ground.
The work trip to Malawi was a great success !!
As part of UNC Project Malawi, I, along with 2 UNC residents, collaborated with anesthesiologists and surgeons at Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe for 1 month, teaching anesthesia in the ORs and classroom. Each day consisted of morning lectures, rounding in the ICU, SIM lab, and working in the ORs. We worked closely with anesthesia students, supporting their educational needs with workshops, power point presentations, and clinical instruction.
The grant from Doximity was truly essential in making this work happen!!!
