I will work alongside Dr. Dave Clarke, a renowned Child Neurology and Epilepsy specialist, to deliver pediatric neurology and epilepsy care at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, Kenya. This hospital serves a vast population of approximately 24 million people from Western Kenya and neighboring countries. This will be through the established global health program, AMPATH (Academic Model Providing Access to Healthcare) that was founded in 2001. AMPATH includes a network of 14 universities and aims to foster long-term and equitable partnerships between Kenya and North America. In addition to providing direct patient care, we will help educate registrars and medical students at Moi Hospital, so they may independently continue to provide the most updated and specialized care to their patients. Our approach will involve adapting recommendations to the available resources in Kenya and developing innovative strategies for managing complex cases in a resource-constrained environment.
The primary beneficiaries of this project will be children in Western Kenya and neighboring countries with neurological problems including epilepsy in addition to medical students and registrars learning at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital. Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital is a national hospital that serves approximately 24 million people. Epilepsy is the most common neurological condition globally, and low-income countries, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa, are disproportionately affected. Children are the most vulnerable group, facing higher incidences of preventable brain injuries and limited access to healthcare services. By expanding access to specialized neurology and epilepsy care, this project will directly benefit those in this underserved population, improving diagnosis, treatment, and long-term management of epilepsy.
The expected impact of this project is the expanded access to both adult and pediatric neurology care for the underserved population of Western Kenya, addressing immediate and long-term healthcare needs. By providing direct care and training to medical students, residents, staff physicians, and other healthcare providers at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, the project will equip them with the skills and knowledge necessary to deliver up-to-date diagnostic and therapeutic management for epilepsy and other neurological conditions. This education will ensure that the hospital staff can continue providing high-quality care to their patients within the constraints of the Kenyan healthcare system, fostering sustainable improvements in healthcare delivery even after the project concludes. The long-term benefit will be a strengthened local healthcare workforce and improved patient outcomes in the region.

Over the course of out trip, we were able to provide both inpatient and outpatient clinical care in addition to providing lectures on Neurology topics to pediatric registrars and medical students.
