Medical Mission Trip to Syria

April 11th
Damascus, Syria

Project Description

I am a four certified internist was a sub, specialty and gastroenterology in advanced Endoscopy. I’m planning to go to Damascus University and teach the gastroenterology fellows and the attending gastroenterology procedures. I will perform procedures on under served and under privileged patients. I will also give lectures and hands-on training to the medical community. I am taking models to teach medical trainings and technicians.

Population Served

The Civil War, which lasted 14 years, destroyed everything in Syria, including the medical facilities, universities and hospitals. The embargo on the previous regime led to disasters problems in the medical care to the population of whole Syria, and especially to the patient who will run away for their lives to the camps in the outskirts of the major cities. A lot of of those people are missing medical care Because of the expense and the unavailability of professionals who can perform these procedures and surgeries, I mainly intend to take care of patience at Damascus University, which serve the pool and underserved.

Expected Impact

1. Take care of the poor and underserved patients.
2. Educate the trainees and the faculty.
3. Educate medical students and general public..

Trip Photos & Recap

I visited Al Mujtahid Hospital a large tertiary public hospital in Damascus. I met with the CEO of the hospital and the chief of the department of Gastroenterology. We discussed their needs regarding equipment and the need for advancing the training of their fellows. A report was submitted to the Syrian American medical society (SAMS). I did hands on training for the fellows one day was for upper endoscopy and one day was for lower endoscopy. I performed endoscopic procedures including an emergency case for an upper GI bleed. One morning I gave a lecture on updates with Barretts Esophagus. All in all I am very grateful for the opportunity to visit and help. I am hopeful to return in September.
