Ohana One mission to Guatemala City

May 2nd
Guatemala City, Guatemala

Project Description

We will be helping 30-50 needy children unable to access timely domestic surgical care for various reconstructive problems like burn scar contractures, wounds, facial and bodily birth defects, hand injuries, etc. We also partner with local doctors to help ensure appropriate post-operative care at the Moore Center. Our mission is help kids return to a life that other children without these conditions enjoy, and to inspire others to do the same!

Population Served

Needy children unable to, or ineligible to, receive timely care through public hospitals in Guatemala. The Moore Center was established to enable pediatric surgery missions and ensure the children get appropriate intermediate and long-term follow-up care.

Expected Impact

We hope to grow our relationship with the Moore Center and return 1-2 times per year to ensure we help as many kids as possible. Our previous mission in 2025 was a tremendous success with over 40 children helped in 4 days.

Trip Photos & Recap

We took care of 35 kids in Guatemala with birth defects as well as trauma and burn scars over a week-long mission. This was my second trip to Guatemala City and I was still struck by the courage and optimism of the children and their families despite lack of access to reconstructive surgery. We operated on a majority of the kids who came to us with operable problems, though turning away even one was difficult and cemented my determination to return as many times as I can to help more kids. The children and their families were extremely thankful for the care they received - there were many hugs and tears of happiness on every day of our trip!
