Tanzania Interventional Radiology Initiative

Project Description

This will be a second trip as part of the Interventional Radiology (IR) training program in Tanzania. We plan to focus on Breast core biopsies and build on the basic IR skills taught during our first trip.

Population Served

Over three weeks in February 2019, we plan to perform Breast core biopsies on 100 patients; while at the same time provide hands-on training for Muhimbili Radiology residents and faculty.

Expected Impact

Our model of providing in-country and longitudinal Radiology sub-specialty training is unique, and could be scaled to other low to middle income countries. We plan to publish and disseminate widely our lessons learned.

In February and March 2019, we will have four(4) US-based Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology Faculty at the Muhimbili Campus in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania; actively training both residents and faculty.

These trips are part of an ongoing effort to establish Radiology sub-specialty (MSc) degree programs at the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS).

Trip Photos & Recap

Thanks to the Doximity Foundation, we had another very successful Tanzania Interventional Radiology Initiative (@road2ir, #road2ir) trip. Our Tanzanian Interventional Radiology trainees are proving to be fast learners, increasingly more confident inserting nephrostomy tubes and performing core-needle biopsies. We also train IR Nurses and IR Technologists, demonstrating the teamwork needed to build a robust IR service. It takes more than a village to establish a new sub-specialty!
