Medical Mission

July 16th
Enriquillo, Dominican Republic

Project Description

This initiative is dedicated to addressing the urgent medical needs of over 2,000 individuals living in a remote and underserved region in the southern Dominican Republic. Building on the success of last year’s mission, I have partnered with grassroots organizations, local healthcare professionals, and the Ministry of Public Health to deliver comprehensive, community-based medical services to populations with limited access to care. This work is profoundly personal, as it serves the same region where my father and grandmother were raised, allowing me to honor their legacy through meaningful service.

Our multidisciplinary team provides a wide range of essential health services, including mammograms, prostate cancer screenings, dental care, chronic disease management, and general medical evaluations. These services are critical in a region where preventive care and early detection are often inaccessible, contributing to avoidable morbidity and mortality. By integrating culturally responsive care with local collaboration, we aim not only to treat immediate health concerns but also to empower community members through education on disease prevention and health management.

As a Nurse Practitioner, I lead and collaborate with both local and visiting clinicians to ensure the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care. This initiative also strengthens local capacity by fostering partnerships, supporting continuity of care, and aligning with public health priorities. Funding will directly support medical supplies, diagnostic equipment, transportation, and outreach efforts necessary to expand services and reach more individuals in need.

Through this mission, we are bridging critical gaps in healthcare access, improving health outcomes, and reinforcing a sustainable model of community-driven care.

Population Served

This trip is deeply important to me because it represents an opportunity to bridge a critical gap in much-needed healthcare for the underserved region of Enriquillo in the Dominican Republic. Access to preventive and primary care services in this community is limited, and many individuals go without essential screenings, timely diagnoses, and treatment. Through this mission, we are able to bring vital medical services directly to those who need them most, improving health outcomes and addressing disparities that would otherwise go unmet.

Beyond its clinical impact, this work holds profound personal significance. Enriquillo is the region where my father and grandmother were raised, and although they are no longer with me, their legacy continues to guide my purpose. Serving this community allows me to give back in a meaningful way, honoring their lives while supporting the health and well-being of others who share that same cultural and geographic connection.

As a Nurse Practitioner, I am committed to delivering compassionate, patient-centered care and collaborating with local healthcare professionals and the Ministry of Public Health to ensure services are culturally responsive and aligned with community needs. Our efforts include providing preventive screenings, health education, and treatment services that are often inaccessible in this region. Just as importantly, we aim to empower individuals with knowledge and resources to manage their health beyond the duration of the mission.
This trip is not only about providing immediate care—it is about creating lasting impact. By working alongside local partners, we help strengthen community trust, support continuity of care, and contribute to sustainable health improvements. Ultimately, this mission reflects my dedication to service, my passion for advancing health equity, and my commitment to ensuring that all individuals, regardless of location or circumstance, have access to quality healthcare.

Expected Impact

We anticipate delivering high-quality care to over 2,000 children and families through this initiative. During our mission, we provided essential resources including prenatal vitamins, hygiene kits, and accessible healthcare services, including the safe administration of medications based on clinical assessments. In addition to direct care, we emphasized health education by teaching individuals about blood pressure management and cardiovascular health, as well as how to accurately monitor their blood pressure at home.

To support ongoing self-management, we distributed blood pressure monitors and glucometers to individuals with identified needs, empowering them to take an active role in their health. We also provided assistive devices, including canes, to those requiring mobility support. Through these combined efforts, we aimed not only to address immediate health concerns but also to promote long-term wellness and independence within the community.

**Reflections on Our Medical Mission to Enriquillo, Barahona, Dominican Republic**

I am filled with gratitude reflecting on our recent medical mission to the Dominican Republic, where we had the privilege of impacting the lives of many individuals who otherwise lack access to basic medical care and life-saving medications.

Our efforts centered on addressing non-communicable diseases — hypertension, diabetes, asthma, failure to thrive, and nutritional deficiencies, among other conditions — as well as the food insecurity that so often contributes to or worsens these illnesses. Working alongside local grassroots organizations and physicians, we were honored to help deliver much-needed care to the community of Enriquillo, Barahona, ultimately serving over 2,000 individuals.

I am deeply grateful for the multidisciplinary team that made this possible, representing pediatrics, maternal-child health, adult medicine, orthopedics, dermatology, and cardiology. Together we offered blood pressure and diabetes screenings, free mammograms, breast ultrasounds, prostate exams, and dental care to community members in need.
Among the many meaningful encounters, one remains especially close to my heart: a young girl with Down syndrome whose mother brought her in for evaluation after days of persistent coughing. Drawing on my experience as a Family Nurse Practitioner working with medically fragile children, I was able to move her to the front of the line for prompt evaluation. Upon examination, I noted she was wheezing, and in collaboration with our team, we provided immediate nebulizer treatment and follow-up medication — free of charge. Witnessing her mother's relief and gratitude is a moment I will never forget.

I'm also thankful we were able to provide dignity kits to young adolescent girls, paired with education on wellness, health, and hygiene. It was important to us not only to educate, but to equip these young women with the actual resources needed to put that knowledge into practice.
Beyond the clinical impact, this mission changed me personally. I am humbled by the trust and love extended to us — both as individuals and as a group. It was a truly life changing experience.
