This trip is deeply important to me because it represents an opportunity to bridge a critical gap in much-needed healthcare for the underserved region of Enriquillo in the Dominican Republic. Access to preventive and primary care services in this community is limited, and many individuals go without essential screenings, timely diagnoses, and treatment. Through this mission, we are able to bring vital medical services directly to those who need them most, improving health outcomes and addressing disparities that would otherwise go unmet.
The primary beneficiaries of this project are the residents of the Enriquillo region in the Dominican Republic, an area recognized as one of the country’s most underserved and socioeconomically vulnerable zones. This population was selected because the southwest corridor—including Barahona, Pedernales, Bahoruco, and Independencia—has some of the highest poverty rates, with many families living below the national poverty line and facing limited access to basic services. Healthcare resources in Enriquillo are scarce: rural communities often rely on understaffed clinics, inconsistent medication supply, and long travel distances to reach higher‑level care. As a result, the region experiences higher burdens of chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes, along with poorer maternal and child health outcomes compared to national averages. Environmental stressors—including water scarcity, food insecurity, and climate‑related challenges—further compound health risks. By targeting this population, the project directly addresses a community with significant unmet needs, where improved access, education, and health services can produce meaningful, measurable impact and reduce longstanding health disparities.
We anticipate delivering high-quality care to over 2,000 children and families through this initiative. During our mission, we provided essential resources including prenatal vitamins, hygiene kits, and accessible healthcare services, including the safe administration of medications based on clinical assessments. In addition to direct care, we emphasized health education by teaching individuals about blood pressure management and cardiovascular health, as well as how to accurately monitor their blood pressure at home.
To support ongoing self-management, we distributed blood pressure monitors and glucometers to individuals with identified needs, empowering them to take an active role in their health. We also provided assistive devices, including canes, to those requiring mobility support. Through these combined efforts, we aimed not only to address immediate health concerns but also to promote long-term wellness and independence within the community.
During our medical mission to Enriquillo, Dominican Republic, we had the privilege of serving individuals and families within the local community, which included individuals that experience limited access to consistent healthcare, preventive services, medications, and health education.
Our team provided compassionate, hands-on care through health assessments, screenings, treatment, education, and guidance regarding ongoing health and wellness needs. Each person we encountered brought a unique story and reminded us of the importance of accessible and compassionate healthcare.
Despite the language barrier, we were able to communicate, connect, and provide meaningful treatment. With the assistance of interpreters, teamwork, patience, and nonverbal communication, we built trust and ensured that the individuals we served felt heard, respected, and cared for.
The impact went beyond the medical care we provided. Sometimes a reassuring touch, a smile, listening to someone’s concerns, or taking the time to educate a patient was just as meaningful as the treatment itself.
Serving the people of Enriquillo was a powerful reminder that healthcare has no borders. Although we traveled to the Dominican Republic with the goal of helping others, the warmth, gratitude, and resilience of the people we served left an equally lasting impact on us. This experience strengthened my commitment to service and reinforced the importance of using my healthcare knowledge and skills to make a difference in underserved communities.
