This trip is deeply important to me because it represents an opportunity to bridge a critical gap in much-needed healthcare for the underserved region of Enriquillo in the Dominican Republic. Access to preventive and primary care services in this community is limited, and many individuals go without essential screenings, timely diagnoses, and treatment. Through this mission, we are able to bring vital medical services directly to those who need them most, improving health outcomes and addressing disparities that would otherwise go unmet.
The medical mission will deliver comprehensive medical and public health services to underserved communities in the Enriquillo region, addressing both immediate clinical needs and long-term health challenges.
Our team will provide primary and acute care, chronic disease management, women’s and pediatric services, and community-focused health education to promote prevention, hygiene, and medication adherence. In addition, we will offer key public health interventions, coordinate with local authorities, and ensure continuity of care through referrals to regional hospitals, ultimately reducing health disparities and strengthening community resilience
During my medical mission to Enriquillo, Dominican Republic, I had the opportunity to care for individuals and families who had limited access to consistent healthcare. Each person I met had their own story and healthcare needs, and being able to provide care while taking the time to listen and connect with them made the experience especially meaningful to me.
One patient in particular had a lasting impact on me. After I treated her, she was so appreciative of the care I provided that she introduced me to her husband, brother, and aunt, who also came to receive care from our team. Throughout my time in Enriquillo, she continued to check on my wellbeing whenever she saw me, and we still remain in touch today.
Meeting her and her family showed me how the impact of caring for one patient can extend beyond a single interaction. I was able to build a genuine connection with them while helping address their healthcare needs, and their gratitude reminded me how meaningful it can be for someone to simply feel heard, valued, and cared for.
The people I met in Enriquillo were incredibly warm and appreciative, and serving them reinforced for me that healthcare is about much more than treating a medical need. The relationships we build with our patients and the compassion we show them can leave an impact that lasts well beyond the visit.
