I will travel to Maputo, Mozambique for one month, where I will engage in clinical and educational rotations at Maputo General Hospital to build point-of-care ultrasound capabilities (diagnostic, procedural) amongst the local housestaff. I will collaborate with local medical students and residents to promote productive educational exchange between our institutions, and will report back to the global health department of my own institution regularly. I will lead a virtual conference to bring together the medicine departments at my institution and at Maputo General Hospital to further build a collaborative relationship.
Maputo General Hospital is the largest and most specialized hospital for a country of over 30 million people. As such, it serves a diverse and generally underserved population, with significant burden of HIV, malaria, and advanced malignancy.
I hope to engage in capacity building work to promote effective use of diagnostic and interventional POCUS work among the local house staff. I will certainly learn a lot from working with the talented physicians in Maputo, including how to effectively care for patients with advanced and complex pathology in an environment without the typical resources available in the United States.
Many thanks to the Doximity Foundation for supporting our trip to Mozambique. We greatly enjoyed working alongside our colleagues in Maputo Central Hospital for a month on the Medicine, Cardiology, and Intensive Care services. We shared our medical impressions and opinions, and learned a great deal from the knowledgeable local physicians about practicing medicine amid often-severe resource constraints. We organized a joint clinical case conference between the local residents and our residency program back in San Diego to discuss the similarities and salient differences between medical practice in the two countries. We met many friendly and gracious people both inside and outside of the hospital, and thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the beautiful country of Mozambique. I greatly appreciate the support from Doximity Foundation and hope to return to Mozambique soon.
