I am seeking support to participate in a medical mission to Mexico City this August, where I will serve in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) caring for pediatric patients recovering from cleft lip and palate repair surgeries. These procedures are life-changing, restoring not only physical function—such as feeding, speech, and breathing—but also confidence and social integration for children and their families. In my role, I will provide critical postoperative monitoring, pain management, and early complication recognition to ensure safe recovery. This mission aligns with my commitment to pediatric care and global health, and it offers an opportunity to contribute my clinical skills to underserved populations while helping transform lives through compassionate, high-quality care.
This mission serves pediatric patients in Mexico City with cleft lip and palate—conditions that significantly impact feeding, speech development, airway function, and social integration. Many of these children come from underserved communities with limited access to specialized surgical and postoperative care. The mission provides access to safe surgical repair and comprehensive perioperative support that would otherwise be unavailable.
As a PACU provider, I will deliver critical postoperative care, including close monitoring, pain management, and early recognition of complications to ensure safe recovery. These surgeries are life-changing, improving not only physical function but also a child’s confidence, communication, and long-term quality of life. By contributing to this mission, I will help support immediate surgical outcomes while also promoting lasting, meaningful change for patients and their families.
Upon my return, I will carry forward the skills and insights gained from this mission into my daily clinical practice, particularly in caring for pediatric patients with complex surgical needs. The experience will further strengthen my ability to recognize subtle changes in postoperative recovery, manage pain effectively, and provide culturally sensitive, family-centered care. I also plan to share my experience with colleagues through informal education and discussion, helping to broaden awareness of global health disparities and best practices in perioperative care. This mission will not only enhance my clinical skillset but also deepen my commitment to service, allowing me to continue advocating for and delivering high-quality care to vulnerable pediatric populations.
My first trip to Mexico City was truly an unforgettable experience. I’m incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to serve alongside an amazing team, helping both children and adults receive life-changing care, including primary cleft lip and palate repairs and rhinoplasty procedures. We were also fortunate to work closely with local foundations in Mexico City and the incredible team at MAC Hospital. It was a meaningful reminder of how powerful collaboration, compassion, and access to care can be—and an experience I’ll carry with me for a long time.
