This is a 1.5 week mission trip to Nairobi, with 5 days of clinic work in collaboration with my CRNA program and Kenya Relief. Kenya relief is a nonprofit humanitarian organization focused on improving access to healthcare, education, clean water, and community development initiatives in underserved regions of Kenya. The organization works alongside local communities and healthcare professionals to provide sustainable support through medical outreach clinics, public health programs, orphan care, women’s empowerment initiatives, and educational opportunities.
The underserved population in Nairobi Kenya, this clinic serves from children to pregnant women, and elderly.
As a graduating nurse anesthesia student, this experience represents an opportunity to use the clinical skills and knowledge I have worked years to develop in service of others while collaborating with local healthcare teams and outreach organizations. I will come back from this mission to come back and serve my own underserved population as a border city with the humility and practice I hope to learn while in Kenya.
Our mission impacted patients and families in rural Migori County, Kenya, a region of approximately 1.29 million people. Many communities face barriers to healthcare access, including shortages of healthcare workers, equipment, infrastructure, and reliable transportation. We were able to provide hands-on medical care to local community members while working alongside Kenyan healthcare professionals and learning from the people we served. We saw a total of 301 patients and performed a total of 60 surgeries for a patient population from age 1 up to age 82.
