This is a follow up visit for our longitudinal collaboration with Dr. Cesar Mota Curiel (Pediatric ED) and Dr. Emma Altagracia Almonte Baez (Pediatric ICU) at the Robert Reid Cabral Children’s Hospital in Santo Domingo, DR.
A multidisciplinary team will embark on a hospital wide workshop with hands on instruction to enhance procedural safety for central line placement in critically ill children.
The Hospital Infantil Dr. Robert Reid Cabral is the country’s primary children’s hospital. With over 350 beds, almost all pediatric specialties are available.
Participants will include pediatric intensivists, surgeons, anesthesiologists, pulmonologists, and emergency medicine specialists.
This training will equip local clinicians with the knowledge and hands-on skills to safely perform ultrasound-guided central venous catheter placement. Main goals include a systems wide reduction in complications and increasing first-pass success. Through a train-the-trainer model, ongoing teleguidance, and remote quality assurance, we aim to build sustainable local expertise that improves the care of critically ill patients while strengthening long-term point-of-care ultrasound capacity.
During our recent visit to Robert Reid, we focused on ultrasound guided central line placement. Physicians from emergency medicine, intensive care, anesthesia, and surgery participated in the training, with successful central line placements in both the emergency department and PICU. It was a valuable opportunity to practice the technique together across specialties and build on our ongoing collaboration.
