We are heading to the slums of Mathare in Nairobi, Kenya for 2 wks to set up free medical clinics for the community, serve at home visits for AIDS patients, provide medical care at a local school and orphanage, and educate the community at a health fair. We bring medications for the community we serve and last year we treated over 2000 people in 2 days at our clinic. We provided medical care for 90 children orphaned from AIDS. We educate approximately 200 health care workers and teachers about smoking risks, cancer prevention, CPR, first aid, and mental health. We also provide food to the community and deliver food staples to shut ins. We are also assisting with construction of the community health center.
The residents of the slums of Mathare North, the children of the By Grace orphange, children from the Tumaini school in Mathare, members of the Living Word Church in Mathare - we chose Mathare since it is called "the poorest slum" in the world.
Providing necessary care and medications and education to a very underserved area, we are teaching them skills to help themselves long after we leave
What an amazing trip! Our team did a health seminar for 150 people from Mathare. We taught them CPR, basic first aid, HIV, respiratory and cardiac health topics. They had never even heard of CPR before. We provided medical care/well visits with dental and vision screening for 100 students at a local school. We set up a 2-day free medical clinic and treated approximately 1500 patients with 2 MDs, myself (a NP), and 2 of my NP students. We did home visits for AIDS patients who could not leave the house. We did construction on a local church/community health center.
