Project Description

I will be involved with Makerere University and Mulago Hospital. I have a background in emergency medicine and specialize in pediatrics. I plan to do teaching with the graduate and undergraduate students on sepsis in the newborn, traumatic brain injuries, and child well care. I will also be working within the emergency department while there. The patient population will be both adults and children in the emergency department as well as children in the maternal child health ward.
I chose to do this trip because I have always been drawn to international health. From my first international study in Nepal to the many trips I have made to Haiti, international health, understanding cultures and their healthcare delivery system, are vital to being a ambassador of health in this country as well. I choose to always advance my understanding of peoples understanding of health, to learn from the people while in Uganda, and to hopefully bring some of that insight back home to the states.

Trip Photos & Recap

I worked with fourth year nursing students and taught lectures on emergency/trauma nursing and collaborated with the medical school in doing skills training sessions. The students were so enthusiastic and eager to learn! We worked on the wards doing physical assessments and treating pediatric patients. I learned so much from my students and am eager to return!
