As an attending pediatric anesthesiologist I will oversee an anesthesia resident and pediatric anesthesia fellow during their Global Health elective. A significant portion of this elective is devoted to working along side the Malawian anesthesia clinical officer instructors to enhance the education efforts for the anesthesia clinical officer students.
We partner with 18 anesthesia clinical officers at Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe Malawi. The hospital is a 900 bed central hospital that also is associated with a medical school and Health Science College. There is an Anesthesia clinical officer training program at the college with an average class size of 23. We work closely with the teachers and students to enhance the educational efforts.
We hope to significantly enhance the educational efforts for the Anesthesia Clinical Officer students by partnering with the Malawian instructors. This partnership allows us to “train the trainers” to make them better teachers and add to their lecture series by introducing flip class room design lectures, problem based learning discussions and simulation training. Training the trainers will lead to better teaching which will have a long lasting effect in the Anesthesia clinical officer students.
Thanks in part to Doximity I was able to visit Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe Malawi and help teach the Anesthesia Clinical Officer students, give lectures as part of a program to teach intensive care skills to a neighborhood hospital and provide clinical care in the operating room. I am so thankful for Doximity's support for Global Health!
