I will be working with the pediatric surgery team to provide surgical care to children at the Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe, Malawi. I will also be conducting several research projects aimed at identifying and mitigating local barriers to surgical care and to improve healthcare quality and outcomes.
This project will benefit pediatric patients in Lilongwe, Malawi. Baylor has a longstanding partnership with Kamuzu Central Hospital in Malawi, and they have graciously invited me to work with them during my research years. I will be spending 18 months in Malawi over the next two years working in the Pediatric Surgery Department at Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe, Malawi.
I hope that my direct contribution to clinical care will help to extend the reach of their surgical team, but more importantly, I hope to help them to establish a research program which will provide useful feedback and evidence for continual improvement in patient care that long outlives my time in Malawi.
Thank you to the Dox Foundation for funding my trip to Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe, Malawi from November 2022-January 2023. During this trip, I was able to work with the pediatric surgery team. I assisted with pediatric surgical procedures, participated in resident education, and partnered with them to complete with several research projects aimed at characterizing patient experience, understanding outcomes and improving patient care. This trip was deeply meaningful to be, and it would not have been possible without the support of the Dox Foundation.
